// taken from website-to give somalisalafi audience (many of you may already be aware of this) an idea about salafi manhaj. For more detailed info please refer to their website. May Allah reward them for their efforts and dedication.
The Salafi Da'wah (da'wah literally means "call", and in this sense it refers to calling to the truth, preaching and propagation) is that of the Qur'an and the Sunnah (i.e. the Religion of Islam - pure and free from any and all additions, deletions and alterations). It means adherence to the Path of the Messenger, may the peace of Allah upon him, and the Faithful Believers, namely the Pious Forefathers (i.e. As-Salaf as-Saalih) of the Islamic Community of Believers and all those who follow in their footsteps in belief, actions and morals.
Allah has said: And whoever contends with and contradicts the Messenger after guidance has been clearly conveyed to him and chooses a path other than that of the Faithful Believers, We shall leave him in the Path he has chosen and land him in Hell, what an evil refuge! [Surah al-Nisaa' 4:115]
Shaikh-ul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah commented on this verse: "All who contradict and oppose the Messenger after the right path has been clearly shown to them, have followed other than the Path of the Believers; and all who follow other than the Path of the Believers have contradicted and opposed the Messenger after the right Path has been shown to them. If one thinks that he is following the Path of the Faithful Believers and is mistaken, he is in the same position as one who thinks he is following the Messenger and is mistaken."
Who are the Salaf and who are the Salafis?
The Pious Forefathers (i.e. As-Salaf as-Saalih) of the Islamic Community of Believers are the Companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him, their Followers (the Taabi'een and the Taabi Taabi'een (i.e. the first three generations of Muslims) and the Scholars of the Ahl-us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah after them who followed their way in belief and deed. Among them are :
Imam Abu Hanifah (150 AH), Al-Awzai (157 AH), Ath-Thawri (161AH), Al Laith ibn Saad (175 AH), Imam Malik (179 AH), Abdullah ibn al-Mubarak (181 AH), Sufyan ibn Uyainah (198 AH), Imam Ash-Shafi'i (204 AH), Ishaq (238 AH), Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal (241 AH), Al-Bukhari (256 AH), Muslim (261 AH), Abu Dawood (275 AH) and others.
Ibn Taymiyyah (728 AH), and his students: Adh-Dhahabi (748 AH), Ibn al-Qayyim (751 AH), Ibn Katheer (774 AH) and others.
Muhammed bin 'Abd al-Wahhab (1206 AH) and many of his students.
And in our time: Abdul Aziz bin Baz, Muhammed bin Saalih Uthaimeen, Muhammed Naasir-ud-Deen al-Albaani.
The Salafis are the Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa'ah. They are the Taaifatul- Mansoorah (the Aided, Victorious Group) and the Firqatun-Naajiyyah (the Saved Sect) which have been mentioned in the following statements of the Messenger, peace be upon him:
"There shall not cease to remain a single group from my community upon the Truth, victorious; they are unharmed by those who abandon them and those who oppose them. They will remain (in my community and in such a state) until they fight the liar (i.e. the Anti-Christ (Dajjal)." [Reported in Sahih Muslim]
"Verily those before you from among the People of the Book split into seventy-two sects and verily this religion . . . "
and in another narration
" . . . this Ummah will split into seventy-three sects: seventy-two will be in the Fire and one in Paradise and that is the Jamaa'ah." [Reported by Abu Daawood - Sahih]
"And this Ummah will divide into seventy-three sects all of which except one will go to Hell and they (i.e. the Saved Sect) are those who are upon what I and My Companions are upon (i.e. those who follow My Way and the Way of my Companions.)" [Reported by at-Tirmidhee - Hasan]
Why do we call ourselves Salafis?
The name Salafi refers to the one who attaches himself to that group of people about whom the Prophet , peace be upon him, said: "The best of people is my generation, then those who come after them, then those who come after them (i.e. the first three generations of Muslims)." [Reported by Bukhari and Muslim - Mutawaatir]. This attachment is not to a single person or persons (i.e. scholars), which is the case of many groups present today. It is not an attachment to a person or even tens of people, but to that which will not err, since it is impossible that the Salaf would unite upon error or misguidance. So in his subscribtion to the way of the Salaf, the Salafi has attached himself to that which cannot go wrong. This is taken from the hadith: "My Ummah will not unite upon error." [Reported by at-Tirmidhee and Haakim - Sahih], and it is not correct that this hadith refers to the people of later ages, since it was only in the era of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and his Companions that the Ummah was free from widespread division and deviation. The deviant sects separated themselves from the Jamaa'ah after them, and from that time onwards their was disunity.
The previous ahaadeeth about the Taaifat- ul-Mansoorah (the Aided Group) and the Firqat-un-Naajiyah (the Saved Sect) show who is meant in this hadith, i.e. those who have the outlook and follow the way of the original guided and united group, the first three generations of Muslims: As-Salaf as- Saalih.

The word Salafi is an abridgement for a long definition. Someone who is a Salafi means:

He is not of the sects of the Khawaarij who consider the Muslims to be Kaafirs (nonbelievers) due to their commiting major sins, and make lawful the taking of their wealth and blood.

He is not of the sects of the Shi'ah (Shi'ites) who hate and curse the Prophet's Companions and claim them to be apostates, claim that the Qur'an has been altered, reject the authentic Sunnah and worship the Prophet's Family, peace be upon them.

He is not of the Qadariyyah who deny Qadr (the Divine Decree).

He is not of the Murjiah who claim Imaan (Faith) to be only in words and not in deed.

He is not of the Asharriyah who deny Allah's Attributes.

He is not of the Sufis who worship graves, saints and claim Divine incarnation.

He is not of the Muqallidoon who necessitate that every Muslim adhere to the Madhhab (School of Thought) of a particular Imam or Shaikh, even when that madhhab differs with the clear verses of the Qur'an and authentic hadiths of the Prophet, peace be upon him.

He values Tawheed (the Unity of Allah), singling out Allah in his worship, supplication, seeking aid, seeking refuge in times of ease and hardship, sacrifice, vow-making, placing total reliance in Him and in judging by what Allah has revealed as well as all other forms of worship. This is the foundation he strives to build without which there is no true Islamic Governance.

He actively tries to remove Shirk (asscociating partners with Allah) which is present in all the Muslim lands, as removing it is a requirement of Tawheed. He knows victory is not possible without Tawheed and that Shirk cannot be fought with the likes of it (i.e. another form of Shirk). So he follows the way of all the Prophets and the example of our Noble Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and he renounces those who, whilst claiming to be the true reformers, compromise with the proponents of Shirk within the Muslim Ummah.

He adheres to the Prophet's , peace be upon him, way in his life and the way of his Companions after him. The Prophet , peace be upon him, said: "I am leaving you two things and you will never go astray as long as you cling to them -- they are the Book of Allah and my Sunnah." [Reported by Al- Haakim - Sahih].

He returns to the Word of Allah and His Prophet, peace be upon him, whenever there is disagreement or difference of opinion, acting in accordance with the saying of Allah: "If you differ in anything among yourselves refer it to Allah and His Messenger if you do believe in Allah and the Last Day, that is more better and more suitable for final determination." [Surah al-Nisaa' 4:59]

He gives precedence to the Word of Allah and His Prophet, peace be upon him, above the words of anybody else, according to the speech of Allah: "O you who believe! Do not put yourselves forward in the presence of Allah and His Prophet and fear Allah. Verily Allah is All-Hearing and All-Knowing." [Surah al-Hujuraat 49:1].

He revives the Sunnah of the Prophet, peace be upon him, in his worship and behaviour and thus his behaviour and his life become a stranger among the people as the Prophet, peace be upon him, has mentioned in his saying: "Islam began as a stranger and shall return as a stranger as it began. So give glad tidings to the strangers." [Reported by Muslim - Sahih]. And in another narration: "So give glad tidings to the few, those who purify, correct what the people have corrupted of my Sunnah." [Al-Silsilah of Shaikh al-Albaani - Sahih].

He enjoins the good (calls to Tawheed, obedience to Allah and imitation of the Prophet , peace be upon him, ) and forbids the evil (warns against Shirk, disobedience to Allah and turning away from the Prophet's, peace be upon him, Sunnah). Thus he warns the people, out of deep concern, about the innovations, misguided ways and of the deviant, destructive groups who only invite the people for worldly gain, rule and authority in the land and not for the establishment of Tawheed or the removal of Shirk.

He acts in accordance with speech of Allah: "Truly he succeeds who purifies it (i.e. the soul)". [Surah as-Shams 91:8], so he seeks constant forgiveness, makes true repentance, brings Allah to mind abundantly, and rushes to perform the righteous deeds in order to purify his soul.

He worships Allah out of a combination of Fear, Hope and Love. Allah says in t

(3)" . . . Call upon Him, with Fear and Hope. [Surah A'raaf 7:56], and He says: "Their limbs do forsake their beds the while they call upon their Lord out of Fear and Hope and they spend (in charity) out of the sustenance which We have bestowed upon them." [Surah as-Sajdah 32:16] and He says: "Yet there are men who take (for worship) others besides Allah: as equal (with Allah). They love them as they should love Allah. But the Believers are overflowing in their love for Allah." [Surah al-Baqarah 2:165]. The Salaf used to say: "Whoever worships Allah with Love only is indeed a Zindeeq (Heretic) and whoever worships Him with Hope only is indeed a Murji (one who believes that sins impart no harm as long there is Faith) and he who worships Him with Fear only is indeed a Haruri (one of those who deserted from the army of 'Ali and fought against him). But he who worships Him with Love, Fear and Hope is indeed a believing Muwahhid (i.e. one clinging to the Tawheed of Allah.)"

The word Salafi is an abridgement of that long definition. Furthermore, Salafiyyah is not the blind following of any particular Shaikh or Imaam. It is only adherence to the Qur'an and Sunnah as understood by the Pious Forefathers (i.e. As-Salaf as-Saalih) of the Islamic Community of Believers (Ummah).

Therefore, upon comprehending this, a Muslim has no option but to become a Salafi; since in doing so he attaches to that group which has been guaranteed success, victory, salvation and safety from the Fire by the Prophet, peace be upon him, Sahih (Authentic) hadiths, and he dissociates himself from that which has deviated and separated from the Firqatun- Naajiyah (the Saved Sect.).

What are the Knowledge-Based Fundamentals of the Salafi Da'wah?
The belief that Allah exists and is the Creator of all things, and all other aspects of Tawheed.

Rather this fundamental encompasses much more. It means:

Belief in Allah's Names and Attributes mentioned in the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah, in accordance to their literal Arabic meanings without denial of these attributes or likening them to the attributes of His Creation. This principle is known as Tawheed-ul-Asmaa' was-Sifaat (Unity of Names and Attributes). Allah says in the Qur'an: "Say, (O Muhammed): He is Allah the One, Allah the Self-Sufficient Master (whom all creatures need). He begets not, nor was He begotten. And there is nothing comparable to Him." [Surah al-Ikhlaas 112]. And Allah also says: "There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer." [Surah ash-Shoora 42:11]
To single out Allah in all acts of worship. This principle is known as Tawheed-ul-Ibaadah (Unity of Worship). Allah says in the Qur'an: "And the Mosques are for Allah (alone) so do not invoke anyone along with Allah." [Surah al-Jinn 72:18]. And He says: "Whoever has hopes in the meeting with his Lord, let him work righteous actions and in the worship of his Lord admit no one as partner." [Surah al-Kahf 18:110]
To single out Allah in His Ruboobiyyah (Lordship). This principle is known as Tawheed-uRuboobiyyah (Unity of Lordship)
The Salafi Minhaaj (i.e. methodology of beliefs) maintains that these three aforementioned principles of Tawheed are inseparable from one another because they are the pillars of the meaning of the testimony: "Laa ilaaha illallaah" (There is nothing which has the right to be worshipped except Allah). Under these principles lie many issues which the scholars among the Salaf have expounded upon in their books throughout the centuries. The Salafi constantly directs his attention to learn and apply these issues so that he may actualize and perfect his Tawheed.

Ittiba'a (Following)

"Say: If you (men) really do love Allah then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful." [Surah Aali Imraan 3:31]

(4)After the Salafi has learnt Tawheed in accordance with its aforementioned principles, it is incumbent upon him to adhere to the way of the Prophet Muhammed, peace be upon him. This is the actualization of his declaration that: "Muhammed ar-Rasoolullaah" (Muhammed is the Messenger of Allah). This fundamental does not only mean that Muhammed ibn 'Abdullah is the last Prophet and Messenger, rather this fundamental is incomplete except with the following:

Belief that the Prophet , peace be upon him, came with two revelations: the Qur'an and the Sunnah. The Prophet, peace be upon him, has said: "I have indeed been given the Qur'an and something along with it." [Reported by Abu Daawood and Daarimee - Sahih]. And he, peace be upon him, has said: "As long as you hold fast to two things which I have left among you, you will never go astray: Allah's Book (i.e. the Qur'an) and the Sunnah of His Messenger." [Reported by Al-Haakim - Sahih].
Belief that obedience to the Messenger is absolute and that his position is unapproachable by anyone else among mankind. Therefore, the Prophet , peace be upon him, is alone to be obeyed and followed. All beliefs, statements, deeds and morals which are against his are to be rejected and annihilated.
Adherence to the Way of the Prophet Muhammed, peace be upon him, is never complete except with the perfection of love towards him. What assists in developing this love is constant adherence to his commands, haste in obeying him, placing forward his statements above all others, the study of his Seerah (life and biographical accounts) and the study and practical implementation of his Sunnah in everyday life. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "None of you believes until I become more beloved to him than his father, child and all mankind." [Reported by Muslim - Sahih].
It is unfortunate that true adherence to the Way of the Prophet , peace be upon him, has weakened in the Ummah and true love for him has all but disappeared. This is due to many reasons among which are:

The abandoning of the Sunnah of our Prophet, peace be upon him, its removal from our daily lives, belittling it and the attitude of pride and arrogance towards it.
The spread of numerous unsubstantiated and fabricated hadiths throughout the Ummah, which are the among the sources of difference and disunity.
The spread of many innovated practices among the Ummah.
The requiring of each Muslim to blindly adhere to a particular madhhab (i.e. taqleed: literally "blind following").
The deliverance of religious verdicts without knowledge or evidence.
The cessation of the implementation of the Sharee'ah (Islamic Law) throughout the lands of Islam and its replacement by the ways and laws of the Kuffaar (disbelievers).
Tazkiyah (Purification)

(5)"Allah did confer a great favour upon the believers when He sent a Messenger from amongst themselves reciting unto them His verses (i.e. the Qur'an) and purifying them (from sins and pagan ignorance by their adoption of his way) and instructing them in the Book (i.e the Qur'an) and the Wisdom (i.e. the Sunnah) while before they had been in manifest error." [Surah Aali Imraan 3:164]

The Qur'an and Sunnah are the only sources for Tazkiyah (i.e. purification, integrity, honesty, righteousness, justice, etc.).
The Prophet Muhammed , peace be upon him, is the purest of mankind in his soul, and his character was that of the Qur'an. There is none that comes close to him in this. For this reason he is the model for Tazkiyah. Allah says in the Qur'an: "Indeed in the Messenger of Allah is a beautiful pattern of conduct to follow for anyone whose hopes lie in Allah and the Last Day and who remembers Allah abundantly." [Surah al-Ahzaab 33:21].
The Prophet's Companions and the rest of the Salaf are also, as a whole, a fine model to follow in Tazkiyah.
There is no way of drawing closer to Allah except by adhering to what the Prophet Muhammed, peace be upon him, came with. The Prophet, peace be upon him, has said: "If anyone introduces into this affair of ours (i.e. the religion of Islam) anything which does not belong to it, he will have it rejected." [Reported by Muslim - Sahih]. And he, peace be upon him, said: "Whoever does an action which we (Allah and His Messenger) have not commanded it will be rejected." [Reported by Muslim - Sahih]
There does not exist any specific set of actions which lead to Tazkiyah, rather the whole of Islam leads to Tazkiyah (i.e. purification of the soul). Allah says: "O you who believe! Enter into Islam wholeheartedly (i.e. obey all the regulations of Allah and His Messenger) and follow not the footsteps of Shaytaan. Verily! He is to you an open enemy." [Surah al-Baqarah 2:208].
The farce referred to as Sufism has corrupted the beliefs, deeds and morals of the Muslims.
The Salafi Minhaaj (i.e. methodology or way) stands between the two extremes of mysticism (i.e. Sufism) and scholastic theology (i.e. the use of logical and rationale "proofs" to explain the teachings of Islam -- such as the misguided Mu'tazilah).
The Salafi Minhaaj represents a true exemplification of piety. It is Imaan (Faith) and not Nifaaq (hypocrisy), purity and not filth.
The Aims of the Salafi Da'wah
The Salafi Da'wah is neither directed towards a specific belief nor a particular action. Likewise the Salafi Da'wah is neither a movement of social reform nor a political party. Rather the Salafi Da'wah is that of Islam in the total sense of the word. As Islam is the religion of Allah, it follows therefore, that it is neither the religion of a specific nation nor of a particular group of people. It is the religion intended for the whole earth and all of mankind. For this reason the Salafi Da'wah is neither one of a specific nation nor of a particular group of people; but it is the Minhaaj inclusive of understanding Islam and acting according to its teachings. Built upon this understanding is the realization that the aims of the Salafi Da'wah are the same as those of the Da'wah (Call) of Islam and not those of a particular religious sect or group, therefore the Salafis remain distinct from the various sects and groups in respect to the way and methodology of Da'wah (i.e. calling, propagating, preaching). They call to Islam as a whole, for its correct understanding and implementation. They do not call to particular aspects of Islam, unlike the many misguided groups who emphasize and call to a particular aspect of it, thereby playing fast and loose with its other aspects to suit their own needs. Thus this true call is, in essence, the call of all the Prophets; to the Tawheed of Allah, the annihilation of Shirk, sincerity in His worship, obedience to his Messengers and the following of their way; this is also the essence of the Salafi Da'wah.

Here are the aims of the Salafi Da'wah which are included in, and of themselves are, the aims of the Da'wah of Islam:

To produce "true" Muslims.

To bring into existence a "true" Islamic Society. Allah says: "They (i.e. the Believers) are those who if We give them the authority in the land, establish the prayer, give the obligatory charity (i.e. Zakat) and enjoin what is good (i.e. to worship Allah in His Oneness and to obey all of His commandments) and to forbid wrong (i.e. to join others in worship with Allah and to disobey any of His orders). And with Allah rests the decisions of all affairs." [Surah al-Hajj 22:41].
To establish the proofs of Allah against the Kuffaar and the deviant heretics and groups within the Ummah. Allah says in the Qur'an: "[We have sent] Messengers as bearers of good news and as warners, in order that mankind shall have no plea against Allah after the Messengers. And Allah is Ever-Powerful, All- Wise." [Surah Aali Imraan 3:165].
To absolve ourselves with Allah by discharging the trust of Da'wah which He has made obligatory upon us. Allah says: "And when a community amongst them said: 'Why do you preach to a people whom Allah is about to destroy and punish with a severe torment?' The preachers said: 'In order to be free from guilt before your Lord (i.e. Allah) and perhaps that they may fear Allah.'" [Surah Araaf 7:164].
The Distinguishing Characteristics of the Salafi Da'wah
Among the distinguishing characteristics of the Salafi Da'wah are:

Actualization of Tawheed in the beliefs, statements, and deeds of the Muslims. Allah says: "Worship Allah (alone) and join none with Him in worship." [Surah al-Nisa' 4:36].
Actualization of the unity of the Muslims through their strict adherence to the Sunnah. Allah says: "And hold fast all of you together to the Rope of Allah (i.e. the Qur'an) and be not divided among yourselves . . . " [Surah Aali Imraan 3:103].

Against the Saudization of Somaliland
The following article is dedicated to the memory of Dr. Annalena Tonelli 60, humanitarian worker and founder of hospital and school for the deaf in Borama, Richard Eyeington, 62, headmaster of the Sheikh Secondary School, and his wife Enid, 61, who were all slain in cold blood in Somaliland.
Recently, I came across news reports on the activities of a group of clerics calling themselves the Authority for Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice trying to impose draconian moral codes on Somaliland citizens in general and residents of the Capital Hargeisa, in particular. The following article is therefore, a reaction to this issue. I can ignore, though grudgingly, when such clerics impose dress codes and other punctilious rituals on Somali men and women in the West because these are in the free world where they can express their opinion and seek legal protection against such abuse, but to import this demented thinking to my homeland and the heart of the capital city is quite unbearable to me. I cannot sit back and watch these people humiliate our women, destroy our beautiful culture, hijack our religion and denigrate the reputation of our country worldwide.
I cannot find a better start than to relate an incident that occurred in my home village, Dilla, 60 miles west of Hargeisa, in the early 1990s. It was Friday and the residents of the little farming village of Dilla, western Somaliland, were looking forward to a normal weekend day. The only worry that the villagers had in mind on such days was the crowds of farmers and nomads that descended on the village to attend Friday sermon, thus swelling population to a breaking point. Fridays, however, were bustling days for business. Teashops and shopkeepers sold more than they could sell for the whole week and mothers had the luxury of abundant choice for milk and ghee from the hordes of countryside men and women coming to sell dairy products to buy weeklong provisions instead. Children also looked forward to special lunches with meat, rice or spaghetti instead of the bland, single menu local hadhuudh (millet).
The whole village carried an aura of sweetness as the shopkeepers, teashops and mothers all burned frankincense to greet the Islamic weekend, perfumed themselves and adorned the best of their clothes for the Friday sermon.
No one had the slightest expectation of how this particular Friday would be any different from the thousands of Fridays that they had lived through. But it was and the people were in the offing of a strange phenomenon that would put the wisdom and patience of villagers, particularly the Ulema (clerics), to unprecedented test.
After Friday sermon, a man stood up in the mosque to address the worshippers. Everybody knew him. He was the headmaster of the school, a respected man, a dedicated teacher and a devoted Moslem. A man of no vices; he never smoked, never chewed Qat and led an ascetic life away from women and other worldly luxuries. The general guess was that he was going to lecture about the needs of the school or complain about children behavior.
You all know me, he said but what I am going to tell you today is something that you have never expected to hear from me. I am a new prophet, he said. The people were frozen. The teacher said that he was told by God to reform the Islamic religion and that anyone who believed that Mohammed (PUH) was the last prophet should read the Quran again.
It is here, he emphasized, raising the Quran book that was in hand, I am not fabricating a new thing. My name is mentioned here in the Quran and all you have to do is to read it carefully.
The worshippers left the mosque dumfounded, but the Ulema decided to have a word with the teacher. They had two things in mind, to assess his mental condition and to judge how adamant he was on his claim of prophethood. Founding that he was mentally sound after a few hours of discussions, the Ulema asked him to promise two things only if they had to leave him in peace. First he should not preach his new gospel in the village two mosques and second that he should not try to spoil the faith of school children. If he accepted to fulfill these two conditions he was free to do whatever he wanted with his message. He accepted the terms. Two years later, the teacher was spotted praying in the mosque and when the Ulema questioned him his answer was that he returned to his faith and had given up his infatuations.
This is not an imaginary tale. It is a true story that all the people in the area know very well. My point in bringing it up, however, is to raise a question: Imagine this taking place in Saudi Arabia or any other place where Wahhabism or religious extremism prevailed! What the fate of this teacher would have been is anyones guess. He would have been hanged mercilessly. However, it is amazing to see how the Ulema of the little farming village of Dilla, had dealt with the issue with the sagacity and tolerance that are the long lost faculties of Islam. By simply patronizing the teachers claim, they had proven that Islam was too strong and too entrenched in the hearts of people to be shaken by bogus prophets. They also set an excellent example for tolerance and compassion in giving the poor teacher the grace to come back without any fear of reprisal.
The Ulema of Dilla represented a generation and a time when Islam and the Somali culture lived together in perfect harmony. When Islam was natural and neatly interwoven into our peoples social fabric. When being Somali and a Moslem was an indivisible whole. Islam back then was like a crystal glass that takes on the color of any liquid that was poured into it. The crystal was so clear that one could see the inside liquid with unmistakable clarity. It was a time when the message of tolerance and peace prevailed, when Islam meant Islam to the true meaning of the word submission to God and living in a state of mental and physical peace with others. Islam was a bond between the worshipper and the worshipped; an internal harmony whose radiance reflected on ones face and was felt in ones humility and generosity towards his fellow (fallible) human beings.
Depending on your view of history, since Somalis embraced Islam at the time of the Prophet or a shortly after his death, it never clashed with the local culture in terms of clothing, eating and going about their ordinary life. Once it settled in the heart, it made there its home and never bothered about how a person looked on the outside. The guiding principle in worshipping God was measured on ones purity of heart as the Quran says Qalbun Salim (soundness of heart) or wa libaasu Ataqwa (..the raiment of righeousness...). Consequently a Somali woman would travel with a single man or even a group of men on long trips, spending nights and days in their company with neither the men nor the woman having any sinister thoughts about their togetherness. The heart was clean and nothing else had mattered much. These Somalis were unknowingly abiding with the prophets hadith, which says:
Verily in the body there is a piece of flesh. If it is sound, the body is all sound. If it is corrupt, the body is all corrupt. Verily, it is the heart.
Somali people continued to wear the qaydar, the dhuug, the Maro Somali, the dhacle and darayamuus, the guntino and Islam was always there where it should belong; their heart, and not on their clothes. Somali girls had traditionally braided their hair with such style that made foreigners sing their proverbial beauty and Islam lived in perfect amenity with it. Somalis recognized unmarried girls by their uncovered hair guudley and married women by their hair cover gambooley. This was the time that our traditions and heritage were the identity of the Somali people as expressed so eloquently by one of our lyrics:
Reer guurayiyo Gabadh tima tidcani,
Waa waxa dhulkeena u gaar ahee La inagu gartaa
One of the aspects to discover the cultural history of any people is to trace the change of fashion in clothing and jewelry in addition to folklore dances and other traditions. Adult Somalis may relish remembering the journey that the Somali attire went through. Islam found Somali men wearing the dhuug and later qaydaar. For the longest time the Somali man was well known for his acacia like hair style, his naked torso, and his gunti, covering the private parts of his body up to the knees, his stick tooth brush (cadday), his barkin, and his three piece weapon, bullaawe (dagger), waran (spear) iyo gaashaan (shield), in addition to his gudin iyo hangool. Then came the time when the Somali man adorned himself with laba-go (two sheets, one wrapped around the waist and the other thrown on shoulders) before he learned the macawis and garbagale (longie and shirt) and kabo carabi or kabo faranji (Arab and European shoes). It was the colonial powers that introduced the daba-xumeeye (shorts), the surwaal (trousers) and koodh (coat).
Womens clothes also went through similar or even more vivid metamorphosis. It went through the maro with the dacle and daraya-muus, the toob-shanan ah (short blouse) and googorad dheer (long skirt) and the daba-gaab (mini skirt), remember ninkaan daba-gaabi, daadihinayn, ama aan dibitaati daaya lahayn during the colonial time to the Diric and hagoog of modern times. The head cover and the hairstyles also went through similar changes along the lines of other costumes. I remember when Somali girls had fooshad (frontal hair collected together in a ball shape) and were called Fooshadley in late sixties and early seventies, and later when Somali women styled their hair like mountains on their heads. The general belief was that many of them used to place a glass cup on the head and built the hair around it to give them the mountain-like shape that was conspicuous in every major town in the seventies.
This was however in the past when Islam lived in ideal co-habitation with the local culture, when fashion changed according to time and age. This was the time when one could pray occasionally, or never prayed at all, fasted in the month of Ramadan or never fasted at all, made pilgrimage to Mecca or never did at all; but would forever consider oneself a true follower of Islam, knowing that to be a Moslem is a bond between man and God and that ones faith is not answerable to anyone else. Just mentioning the name of the prophet or singing a religious hymn would bring one to emotional ecstasy; no one ever doubted the truth of their faith, simply because Islam was synonymous with being a Somali. It was not something to show off but something entrenched deep in ones heart. One didnt need to advertise the color of his faith; one was simply a Moslem and never ceased to be one.
Nowadays, it is sad to see that perfect co-habitation; that ideal harmony between Islam and Somali culture swept aside by a new brand of Islam that is being pushed down the throat of our people. Wahhabism. Anywhere one looks; one finds that alien, perverted version of Islam that depends on punctilious manners more than it depends on deep-rooted faith. A strange uniformity, only known in the desert and uncreative cultures of Arabia, has crept into the social manners of our people. The unique fashion and identity of our people has changed forever. We have become a people without fashion, without culture and without identity. Our women, whose beauty has allured the eyes of every traveler, have been brainwashed by the prophets of Wahhabism into adorning the black cloak of ignorance. Instead of being native, Islam has become alien and instead of being a faith well guarded in the heart, it has become an outside faade that had to be advertised through strange attire and physical looks; black overflowing cloaks for women and white, ankle-length Arabian gowns and long unkempt beards for men.
It happened that I was reading a report about the opening of an exhibition on African hairstyles over the centuries in Paris, called Parures de Tjte (literally, head costumes). The report said that at the Musie Dapper headdresses, masks, statutes and hair accessories, some 100 pieces from tribal groups hailing from approximately 20 countries, show the primordial role of the hair in ancient African societies. It continued to say that given that black people have been perfecting the art of hair since long before Africa wore the political boundaries that it does today, it was probably a natural outcome that their tresses now have an impact on hairstylists the world over. I asked myself, yeah. How much contribution do my people have in this? May be some pictures from the good old days, before modern fanatics reduced Islam into a jealous guardian of Harems (women) hair, cheeks, arms, shins, feet, voice and smile.
It is a pity and anachronistic of sorts to see that at a time when Saudi Arabia, the home of Wahhabism, is reassessing the damage that Wahhabism and extremism had done to their countrys name and to the reputation of Islam all over the world, at a time when scales fell from the eyes of the Saudis according to one American official, at a time when the events of Sept. 11 and terrorist explosions in Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Morocco, East Africa and other parts of the world have made many Moslems revisit their history and re-read their doctrinal beliefs; that Wahhabism has to find a save-haven in our country.
Anyone who followed recent press reports from Somaliland would have read that a group of Saudi-oriented clerics, calling themselves the Authority for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, an offshoot of its Saudi counterpart, has been demanding the enforcement of a draconian rules on what the Somalilanders wear, say and do in their private lives.
Before we proceed further it may be helpful to have a quick look at Wahhabism and how it is so alien to our culture.
Wahhabism is an austere and closed school of thought promulgated by Mohammed Inb Abul Wahhab Najdi in the 18th century. Discarding Islams all four legal schools as corrupted versions, Ibn Abdul Wahhab demanded his followers a confession of faith a second time to Wahhabism. In his attempt to eradicate other schools of thought, Mohammed Ibn Abdul Wahhab conspired with the British for the destruction of the Ottoman Caliphate, which he saw pursuing a decadent and an unethical Sunni Islam as mentioned by one of the British spies in a book titled Confessions of a British Spy.
While traditional Somali religious scholars read all four schools of thought (madahib) with equal respect and an open mind, Wahhabis view the cannons of Islamic jurisprudence and the colossal work of scholarship left by generations after generations of the Muslim Umma as an apocrypha. Hence, the schools of Shafii, Hanbali, Hanafi, and Maliliki should go with the wind, while the masterpieces of Sufism scholars such as Al Ghazalis Ihya Ulum ad-Din (The Revival of the Religious science), the most referred book of Islam after the Quran and the Hadith, al-Munqid min ad-Dalal (the savior from Error), the Mishkat al-Anwar (The Niche of Lights) and Muhyiddin Ibn Arabis Alam al-Mithali (Ideal world) are counted by Wahhabism as nothing more than infatuations of demented men.
The Wahhabis consider, or previously considered, many of the practices of the generations which succeeded the Companions as bidah (objectionable innovation), writes the Concise Encyclopaedia of Islam, Stacy International Cyril Glasse, Second Edition, 1991, not even giving the least thought to Shafiis ingenious classification of Bidah into Bidah hasanah (good innovation) and bidah siyaah (bad innovation).
With tolerance being the norm for all other Madhabs, Wahhabism, is the only school that compels its followers strictly to observe Islamic rituals, such as the five prayers, under pain of flogging, and for the enforcement of public morals to a degree unprecedented in the history of Islam.
Sufism, however, which was the Somali way of Islam and which Wahhabism condemns as a heresy, reaches out to the heart and good sense of all mankind without distinction. Instead of shunning all other faiths and branding them as bogus religions, Sufism sees all faiths as equally valid, following directly Gods words wheresoever ye turn, there is the face of God. Where Wahhabism sows hatred and rancor even among Moslems, Sufism preaches sulh-e kull (universal peace) and Mahabbat e-kull (universal love).
The most conspicuous foot soldiers of Wahhabism are the moral police known as Mutawiun, who roam in the streets like riot police and force people to perform rituals or adhere to Wahhabisms code of decency in dressing and other mannerisms.
Waking up to the monster that Wahhabism had become, the Saudi Authorities had started cracking down on the religious police. Too little too late, one may say. But at least they are acting at last. Thousands of Mutawiun have been fired, while other thousands have been sent to re-orientation centers. The curriculum of schools has been revised and Saudi students have started the 2003/2004 academic years with new curriculum that takes the new world that emerged after Sept.11 into account. Saudi children are being re-educated to see human beings as human beings and not as infidels and Wahhabis.
A Saudi Journalist Turki al-Hamed wrote in the Asharq al-Awsat Saudi culture belongs to a past age. It is not appropriate for the age of globalization. Peoples minds were stuffed with bad concepts.
A more blunt criticism came from former Bosnian Interior Minister Mohammed Basic who accused the Saudis of poisoning our youth with their teachings (read Wahhabism).
Wahhabisims best example of humanism is the harsh religious police that forced a group of school girls to their deaths by forcing them to go back to an inferno that had been their school. Their crime? Forgetting the head coverings in their haste to save themselves. (Time Magazine, 15 Sept. 2003).
This is the Wahhabism that the Saudi-oriented clerics want to impose on Somaliland. This is the sect that produced 15 of the 19 suicide bombers of Sept. 11. This is the mentality that the Saudis are today taking pains to change.
It is a closed mind sect that turned Islam into a fragile creed that lives in constant fear of childrens toys and games such as Barbie dolls and Pokemon. It is a school of misinformation and ignorance that rebuked an Egyptian doctor for publishing an article on epilepsy because it challenged against the prophets statement that epilepsy was caused by Jinn (look at the September 15, 2003 edition of the Time Magazine).
It is heart warming though to mention that as I was writing this article, 300 people including 51 women, have submitted a petition to the Saudi Royals, calling on them for a radical reform to tackle the growing extremist Islamic influence.
This is the brand of distorted Islam that the neo-Muslim clerics want to enforce on our people. They want to tell us that over the LAST 14 CENTURIES, our people have been practicing the wrong religion; that since the dawn of Islam, Somali people had lived in vain, worshipped in vain and died in vain. God help them, they all will be burned in hell because they did not follow the correct path - Wahhabism.
These people are out to eradicate our culture, our traditions, our songs, our poetry and our folklore dances. They brand our traditional children stories of Diin iyo Dacawo (dawaco), arrawelo and dheg-dheer as bawdy literature that has no place in the puritanical society that they aspire to build. Forget about Ina Xagaa Dheeres satirical anecdotes, which the fanatics want to discard from our peoples memory. For these fanatics, the breast of the countryside mother who suckles her baby while selling milk in the streets of Hargeisa is a sin, not motherhood as many of our ordinary souls would see it. It is this obsession with sex, this concept of viewing women only as an object of sex, created for mans libido relief, that turned womens body into a thing of shame. The concept is that just like one cannot display sex organs in public, women as objects of sex, not human beings with intelligence and rights, should always remain under cover. Hence, we shall never have models and beauty queens to publicize the beauty of our women down the catwalks of Paris, New York and London. It may be worth to mention here that on the several occasions that the name Somali caught international media, other than civil wars and Black Hawk down, were associated with women. It was Iman, that Somali model, who made the name Somali synonymous with such exotic, unique and Cushitic beauty. Weris Deiria is now making headlines despite the daily curses and ridicule she receives from die-hard fundamentalists. It is also since that astute and clear-headed lady, Edna Adan Ismail, has become Somalilands Foreign Minister, that the international community is lending an ear to Somalilands case.
If we let them have their way, these prophets of purity would soon be on a mission to destroy what has remained of our culture. The melodious voices of Zahra Ahmed, Khadra Dahir, Hibo Mohammed, Amina Abdillahi, Sada Ali, Magool, Maandeeq, Farhiya Ali, Zainab Egeh and many others of our women singers we will be history. The cassettes of their songs will be burned in the streets. Just remember Taliban. They want to edit, re-write and censor the treasures of Somali oral literature. Future generations will not be able to enjoy our beautiful folk dances, particularly womens heelo yar-yar. Even traditional religious gatherings of our people such as siyaaradii Aw Barkhadle, Ramadan hymn chanting sessions in teashops and the dhikr/xadro circles of sufi tariqas, will be brandished as devil worshiping rituals of the infidels. It has been a strange dj vu that while I was working on this article, I came across a news item that Saudi Arabias moral police had arrested expatriate workers practicing Sufism in their private house in the town of Sakaka, capital of the north Al Jouf region. Sufism in may parts of the Moslem world is a healthy spiritual communion with God, a combination of enchanting hymns and ritual dances that allows the individual to let out pent up stresses of life.
These fanatics are on a mission to eliminate co-education schools, shroud young girls and deprive them of their healthy childhood social interaction with boys. They want to bury them alive and teach them from an early age that the female body is an eyesore to public decency. A girl should either be in the grave or under a mans custody. I have to mention here that when I step out into the street in the morning I see groups of girls waiting for school buses; all of them Arabs except for two Somali girls. All the Arab girls of all nationalities look bubbly, tossing their beautiful uncovered hairs and showing off their latest hairstyles. Even those with head covers threw it lightly on the shoulders or barely on the back of the head. They even sometime waved hello for me or for my son. The two Somali girls, however, were fully shrouded with black from head to toe. One could barely see their eyes and they even wore black heavy socks on their feet. Their unique Somali features wrapped into a shapeless form, their shy and modest smiles buried and a kind of heavy footed, reptile shuffling replacing their elegant, Somali-only, rolling hip-walk. The black veil and the black skin also make a very sad and unwelcome combination, while the contrast between a black veil and a fair skin at least mitigates the gloomy impact for Arab women. I wonder: when did my people become more Arab than Arabs? When I met some of the Arab girls later in life, we often recognized each other and exchanged smiles, hellos, how-are-yous and pleasant good byes.
What about the Somali girls? Well, would I even recognize them? Did they have a face? Even if they recognize me through their shrouds and dare to say hello to me, how would I know who they were. I could only pass them without glancing at them lest they accuse me of blasphemy, silently remembering Abdillahi Abdi Shubes
Shaydaan aanad arkayn,
oo shaambinaaya agtaada,
waa naag shaadhir hagoogan.
May God give him peace in his abode, because had he lived until today, Abdi Shube would have probably been stoned to death.
The question is how far can we allow these fanatics to use OUR religion for THEIR own political goals? How long can we tolerate our identity to be ripped into pieces in the name of alien ideas? How much of our culture, our heritage and the reputation of our country and our religion are we ready to sacrifice before we act?
These people love to live in the dark. They thrive on the silence of the unwilling intellectuals and the gullibility of the ignorant majority. They hide under the cloak of religion and scare people with their indiscriminate use of terms such as blasphemous, infidels, apostates, sacrilegious, atheists, westernized minds and many others. They use the available democratic atmosphere to herd us towards the abyss. One pertinent question that begs for an answer all the time is why is it that it is always those who fail in school or in life who turn to such religious extremism? One may wonder if the problem is one of lost self-esteem, an internal urge for revenge and a desire for power and domination. No wonder that women bear the brunt of their onslaught for enslavement, for what better way to regain their lost self-esteem than suppressing women and denying them the success that they themselves had failed to achieve. In this way they could exercise power not only on their women but on the women of the whole community, thus bringing those successful guys who despised them for their failure under their mercy- hitting them at their Achilles heel, while hiding under the cloak of religious sainthood.
It is time to tell these sick men that the bare breast of the woman suckling her child is not about pornography, but about motherhood. The girls and boys sitting next to each other in class are not indulging in a sex orgy, you demented paranoiacs, but enjoying a healthy educational environment. The girl walking in the street without a headcover and wearing a big smile is not about flirting; it is about beauty of life. The woman holding a lively conversation with a male friend in a coffee house or a shopping mall is not about illicit affairs; it is about a much-needed human relationship and a healthy exchange of intellectual ideas. The woman wearing the traditional diric and hagoog and regally strolling in the street is not about indecency but about culture. The nightingale voices of our female singers are not about eroticism, you philistines, but about art, music and enjoyment of one of Gods marvelous gifts. The Awra (private parts) and indecency are not about what you tell us, you sex maniacs, but about deep-rooted manners handed down through the centuries. Sufism is not about heresy but about breaking the monotony and adding passion and music to religion. Visiting graves is not about idolatry, but about remembering and giving due respect to the dead whose souls live among us. The foreign humanitarian workers in our country are not infidels whose killing guarantees one to go directly to heaven but angels of mercy and enlightenment without whom we would be doomed to hell and darkness. We know right from wrong and proper from improper. We dont need or want you to teach us YOUR way of Islam.
It is time we have to speak out. If we dont do it today, we wont be able to do it tomorrow. Because there will be no tomorrow as our country descends into 7th century Arabia.
Bashir Goth.

Perverted and Malicious

In Response to Goth's Article

I was stunned to read the misguided and corrupted article written by the person Bashir Goth "Against the Saudization of Somaliland" and posted on Somali Websites. This article was drafted by Mr. Goth with mischief and evil intentions in mind against Islam and its followers. There isn't any truth and logic in what he says and its crystal clear that this person is outside the fold of Al-Islam and here is the evidence of why it is so:
1. Authentic religion like Al-Islam and man made traditions are two different things
2. Wearing of 'Xijaab or Headscarf' by mulsim women is a mandatory command of Allah in order to safeguard them from evil minded people and keep them in good faith and chaste
3. Islam is a religion based on moderation, justice, purity and good manners
4. Sheikh Mohamed Abdi-wahab was a great scholar of Islam and never contradicted the four Imams of Islam or schools of thought
5. Islam liberated women, gave them dignity and never oppreses or exploites them for any purpose; be it financial or sexual as happens in many parts of the world
6. Somali girls are better off with taking Islam as a whole and you see the dignity and radiance on their faces
7. It is obligatory in Islam to kill someone who foresakes his religion Al-Islam unless he/she comes back into the fold of Islam on the spot and repents honestly

Hence Mr. Goth's article is at war with Islam and its followers around the globe but Islam and its followers are here to stay and prosper and he wouldn't be able to do anything about it because Allah the all powerful promised to safeguard Islam and its followers till the day of judgement. Also Islamic Scholars, intellectuals, dutiful soldiers of Islam are ever ready and watchful to propagate and protect Al-Islam.

Therefore, Mr. Bashir Goth, has bargained for a far cheaper price, whatever that price or material gain is !! Because he is campaigning for women nudity in Somalia and the destruction of Islam in essence. He is glorifying Westernism, pornography, materialism, social slavery and immorality. His article has no meaning and is bascially complete with lies, hatred against Islam and muslims and no one who is a muslim should believe his trash article for a second. His whole article seems to be drafted by 'Satan' and no doubt whatsoever that Mr. Goth is an evil person who has lost all hope and honour with regard to Islam and its followers. He is agent of an alien culture and must be expelled from Somali society.

Finally, Islam and its philosophy will grow and prosper in Somalia and Somali women will not take lecture from somebody who is perverted and misguided. Mr. Goth is hopeless person who is attempting to take on mighty Islam and its followers but he is totally deluded and possessed by the charm of Satan's devilishness. In the eyes of muslims, Mr. Goth, you are a laughable cow !!

Against the Somalisation of Islam_ A refutation to Mr. Goth.s Article
By Muumina-Shaqlan
Email: -[1].pdf

1. Preliminary Remarks
It is not my intention to offend or defend anybody in this write up. However, I find
Mr. Goth.s article titled .Against the Saudization of Somaliland. revolting and
offensive to the basic principles of Islam, ulama and Somali women. There are
so many inaccuracies and disinformation about Islam in his article. He deceitfully
questioned about the authenticity of salat, zakat, sawm, haj and hijaab
practices as basic obligations in Islam. His naked attack on Saudi ulama and
Da.wah groups in Somalia is completely unjustified and unwarranted. It is utterly
wrong of Mr. Goth or any other man to indulge into something that is entirely a
religious matter of women.s concerns.
Reading through Mr. Goth.s article, four things noticeably emerge. These are, (a)
his hatred for ulama (b) his burgeoning passion for women in jaahiliyah, (c) his
inadequate knowledge with islam, and (d) his vanity and self-satisfaction. At any
rate Mr. Goth is not known to be a dependable man with solid principles,
politically or otherwise. His present article matches very well with his writings in
the late 1980s on the Somali civil strife. He continues to be as irrational as any
time before.
Mr. Goth.s cynical and inapt article appeared in the Addis Tribune on November
21, 2003 under the title .Against the Saudization of Somaliland.. About 8
weeks earlier on September 26, 2003 a very similar article entitled .Saudi
Arabia.s Wahabism and the Threat to Ethiopia.s National Security., by a
certain Alem-Zelelem appeared in the same paper. Both articles were promptly
posted for wider dissemination in a number of Jewish Zionist websites and
translated into many languages including French, Spanish, Italian and Hebrew.
Translations into German and other European languages were expected to follow
soon. It should not be difficult to understand why should such articles attract so
much interest and coverage worldwide. Both articles have been adapted and
appropriately reproduced in the MEMRI website at the same time on December
9, 2003 with the following sensational titles:
! Somali Muslim Journalist on the Detrimental Effects of
Wahhabism on His Country
! Ethiopian Journalist on the Detrimental Effects of Saudi
Arabias Poisonous Wahhabism on His Country
Obviously such articles mean a great deal to the enemies of Islam. It is very
unfortunate that some people (with muslim names) contribute to the defamation
of Islam intentionally and/or mockingly without paying due attention to the
consequences of their actions. Such persons very much fit into the category of
hypocrites described by Ayat 8-10 of Surah AlBaqarah as quoted below:
ﻦﻣ ﺎﱠﻨﻟ ﻦﻣ ﻮﻘﻳ ﺎﱠﻨﻣﺁ ﻪﻠﻟﺎﺑ ﻮﻴﻟﺎﺑ ﺮﺧﻵ ﺎﻣ ﻢ ﻦﻴﻨﻣﺆﻤﺑ ) 8 (
And of mankind, there are some (hypocrites) who say: "We believe in Allah and the
Last Day" while in fact they believe not.
ﻮﻋﺎﺨﻳ ﻪﻠﻟ ﻦﻳﺬﱠﻟ ﻣﺁ ﻮﻨ ﺎﻣ ﻮﻋﺪﺨﻳ ﱠﻻ ﻢﻬﺴﻔﻥ ﺎﻣ ﺮﻌﺸﻳ ) 9 (
They (think to) deceive Allah and those who believe, while they only deceive
themselves, and perceive (it) not!
ﻲﻓ ﻢﻬﺑﻮﻠ ﻗ ﺮﱠﻣ ﻢ ﺰﻓ ﻪﻠﻟ ﺎﺿﺮﻣ ﻢﻬﻟ ﺬﻋ ﻢﻴﻟ ﺎﻤﺑ ﻮﻥﺎ
ﻮﺑﺬﻜﻳ ) 10 (
In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allah has increased their
disease. A painful torment is theirs because they used to tell lies.
Mr. Goth (Bashir Sheikh Cumar Good) lives in the Emirates where, as an
.established. journalist, he has access to virtually all the media of the world. Why
on earth did he come down so low to write in the Addis Tribune? Is he aspiring
to join the Federal Parliament of Ethiopia as the infamous Ayaan Hersi Ali had
made her way to the Dutch Parliament by slandering Islam. It is common
knowledge that Chequebook journalism is a thriving business; particularly when it
serves the interest of the Zionist movement through collaborators from within the
Islamic world. Let us hope that Mr. Goth had been rewarded, materially or
otherwise, by his masters and that his effort did not go in vain.
Responding to Mr. Goth.s shameful and derogatory article, I have assumed that:
1. The material published in the Addis Tribune and attributed to Mr. Goth
had not been doctored, tampered with, manipulated and/or distorted by
the editors of the paper; and
2. The actual person in the story of the crazy teacher of Dila village who
claimed .prophet-hood., according to the article, is not Mr. Goth himself.
2. Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in Islam
We the Muslims believe and accept that Islam by definition is the same eternal
message from Allah (SWT) and revealed through the ages to all prophets and
messengers, which include Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and
Muhammad (SAAWS). We have no knowledge of an old and a new islam;
orthodox and modern islam; Sufi, Wahabi, puritanical or adulterated islam.
Islam is one and only one thing to all those who profess the Shahadah, in word
and deed, as stipulated in the Holy Quraan and the Sunnah of the Prophet .
It is the western orientalists and their pretenders/imitators like Mr. Bashir Good
(or Goth as he prefers to be called) who fabricate and coin such satanic terms
with the intention of defaming the religion of Islam and muslims.
A noble and commonly known characteristic of Islam is that it stands for the
.Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.. There are numerous verses in
the Quraan and the Authentic Ahadith of the Prophet that urge muslims to
promote virtue and prevent vice in the world for the good of the humanity.
Through Ayah 104 of surah Al-Imran Allah calls upon believers to:
ﻦﻜﺘﻟ ﻢﻜﻨﱢﻣ ﺔﱠﻣ ﻮﻋﺪﻳ ﻰﻟ ﺮﻴﺨﻟ ﺮﻣﺄﻳ ﺮﻌﻤﻟﺎﺑ ﻮﻬﻨﻳ ﻦﻋ
ﺮﻜﻨﻤﻟ ﻚﺌﻟ ﻢ ﻮﺤﻠ ﻔﻤﻟ ) 104 (

Let there arise out of you a group of people inviting to all that is good (Islam), enjoining Al-
Ma'ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam orders one to do) and forbidding Al-
Munkar (polytheism and disbelief and all that Islam has forbidden). And it is they who are
the successful. (Al-Imran 104)

3. Why is Mr. Goth nervous about Hijaab?
Mr. Goth appears to be a professional teller-of-tales with some memorabilia not
from the crazy sixties only, but also Fooxleh (Sufis) fallacies, pastoral oral
literature, and mirqaan/qaraami fantasies. His article, which is devoid of
objectivity and substance reflects a great deal about his personality and
behavioral tribulations. He has lustful desires to female body. He unsuccessfully
tried to hide his sensitivity to women and enthusiasm to their melodies. He
attempted but failed to hide his .Casanova./shabeelnaagood obsessions with
women. If Mr. Goth is not being intellectually dishonest, why can.t he come out to
express his passions and unbridled frustrations without bothering others with his
unconvincing and tenuous allegations of what he calls .Wahabism.. A man of his
age and knowledge with the Somali cultural values and Islamic principles (as he
alludes to be) would not have produced such a slanderous article against Somali
women. His miserable arguments are all out of touch with the reality. The likes of
Iman, Weris and [Ayaan] and the long list of .Shimbirayahow heesa. in his
article are not representatives of the Somali women. Thanks to Allah, we are no
longer sex objects for sick men who value women just for their bodily shapes,
figures, complexions, costumes, etc.
As a matter of fact, Mr. Goth exposed himself to be unqualified to raise and
objectively write about issues of concern to the Somali women. Our Islamic
costumes are of no concern to any party other than ourselves and, since wearing
hijaab is a religious obligation for muslim women, it can hardly be an issue for
debate. Each woman dresses up as she pleases. Those of us who desire to
faithfully stick to the Islamic dress codes and guidelines as described in the
Quraan and Sunnah will obediently comply with it no matter what. Matters
pertaining to the hijaab are addressed in a number of Ayat in the Quraan. For
example, Ayah 59 of Surah Al-Ahzab (quoted below) depicts what kind of
clothes, how and why muslim women should wear.
ﺎﻳ ﺎﻬﱡﻳ ﱡﻲﺒﱠﻨﻟ ﻞﻗ ﻚﺟﺄﱢﻟ ﻚﺗﺎﻨﺑ ﺎﺴﻥ ﻦﻴﻨﻣﺆﻤﻟ ﻦﻴﻥﺪﻳ ﱠﻦﻬﻴﻠﻋ ﻦﻣ

O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to
draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies (i.e.screen themselves completely
except the eyes or one eye to see the way). That will be better, that they should be
known (as free respectable women) so as not to be annoyed. And Allah is Ever Oft-
Forgiving, Most Merciful.
We wholeheartedly acknowledge receipt of the message of Allah to us through
his beloved Messenger and respond to it by saying affirmatively:
... ﺎﻨﻌﻤﺱ ﺎﻨﻌﻃ ﻚﻥﺮﻔﻏ ﺎﻨﱠﺑ ﻚﻴﻟ ﺮﻴﺼﻤﻟ ) ﺮﻘﺒﻠﺁ 285 (
. We hear, and we obey. (We seek) Your Forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the
return (of all) (Al-Baqarah 285)
If, in the first place, Mr. Goth does not believe in religious obligations, ethics, morality
and values in Islam, he has no business in telling muslims what to do about their faith.
The Somali women have too many other priorities to worry about and are
not interested in heeding to Mr. Goth.s pagan propaganda. If his concerns
for women were genuine and not emotive .crocodile tears., why is he so
much preoccupied and obsessed with their bodily attributes only_ beauty,
curves and shapes, movements, hairstyles, and .nightingale. voices. Why
is it so important to him to gaze at a destitute woman breastfeeding her
baby in the open or young girls waiting for a school bus on the roadside?
He should rather see a therapist before his obsessions lead him to possible
criminal acts.
4. Ulama versus Far-hungri Graduates on Women Issues
I believe that Sheikh Mohammed ibn Abdelwahab, like many other great
muslim thinkers, rendered significant service to Islam and muslisms by alerting
the Ummah against the dangers of shirk rituals. In contrast to Mr. Goth.s
misleading suggestion, Sheikh Abdelwahab never came up with a new Madhab
or Dariiqah nor did he dismiss, condemn or doubt the appropriateness of any the
four Fiqh Schools of thought. He rather emphatically and correctly expressed
his dislike of the Shirk practices in the name of Islam by certain misguided Sufis
and their blind followers.
On women issues, the difference between the opposing views of the Ulama and
the pseudo-intellectuals like Mr. Goth is simple and straightforward. The
Ulama, being the .disciples of the prophets. of Allah, have real and substantive
messages to convey to all. Guided by the Holy Qur.aan and Sunnah, they
preach islamic values and ideals. Their only motive is to please Allah by
informing people about Islam. With the help of Allah, they undertake the
tremendous responsibility of guiding people from the darkness of Jaahiliyah to
the light of Islam as proclaimed by Ayah 257 of Al-Baqarah (quoted below).
ﻪﻠﻟ ﱡﻲﻟ ﻦﻳﺬﱠﻟ ﻮﻨﻣﺁ ﻢﻬﺟﺮﺨﻳ ﻦﱢﻣ ﺎﻤﻠﱡﻈﻟ ﻰﻟ ﻮﱡﻨﻟ ﻦﻳﺬﱠﻟ ﺮﻔ

Allah is the Wali (Protector or Guardian) of those who believe. He brings them out from
darkness into light. But as for those who disbelieve, their Auliya (supporters and helpers) are
Taghut [false deities and false leaders, etc.], they bring them out from light into darkness.
Those are the dwellers of the Fire, and they will abide therein forever.
By promoting virtue and preventing vice, our beloved ulama portray the true
moral fiber of muslims as described in Ayah 71 of Attawbah (quoted below).
ﻮﻨﻣﺆﻤﻟ ﺎﻨﻣﺆﻤﻟ ﻢﻬﻀﻌﺑ ﺎﻴﻟ ﺾﻌﺑ ﺮﻣﺄﻳ ﺮﻌﻤﻟﺎﺑ

The believers, men and women, are Auliya' (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one
another, they enjoin (on the people) Al-Ma'ruf (i.e. Islamic Monotheism and all that Islam
orders one to do), and forbid (people) from Al-Munkar (i.e. polytheism and disbelief of all
kinds, and all that Islam has forbidden); they perform As-Salat (Iqamat-as-Salat) and give
the Zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah will have His Mercy on them. Surely
Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
Unlike the Ulama, the present-day far-hunguri self-styled intellectuals
(jaahiliyah graduates) promote satanic values and immorality on the pretext of
modernizing of societies. However, greed for worldly possessions like material
wealth, fame and power constitutes their driving force. The primary victims of
their satanic values are the women.
Lately the international media has been heavily loaded with news items on
muslim women dress codes. The hijaab of the muslim girls in Europe in general
and in France, Germany and Italy in particular has been receiving huge attention.
Banning hijaab in the French schools is one of the most recent violations against
the rights muslim women in France.
While the media continues to report negatively about Islam and muslims, the
number of people embracing Islam is on the increase each year, particularly in
western countries. The media claim that women are oppressed under the
Shari.ah and deprived from their basic human rights. Surprisingly, however, the
vast majority of the converts to Islam are women confirming that they are better
off under Islam. One might suggest that most of the new muslim women
embraced Islam through marriage. But that is not necessarily the case and
Mr. Goth himself being married to a non-muslim can bear witness.
5. Mr. Goth.s Perfect Co-habitation Between .Somali Culture. and Islam
Little is known about the system of religious believes, which the Somalis followed
before the advent of Islam in the Horn of Africa over 14 centuries ago.
Nevertheless, the mythical names like Waaq, Tiniixi, Tincaaro and Tincaws
could be symbolizing the deities/idols, which the ancient Somalis worshipped.
Some legends narrate the stories of certain high priests like Bucur Bacayr and
Geeddi Baabow who promoted immoral customs in their communities. The
legend says that these pagan priests used to keep brides for the first seven
nights of their weddings to themselves for molestation. Although islam had
eliminated such immoral acts many centuries ago, there are some customs
reminiscent of the pre-islamic pagan rituals still rampant in Somalia. Some are
outlined below.
Mr. Goth argued that Islam and what he called Somali culture harmoniously
cohabited for centuries in the past. That is not true. He must be referring to some
rather primitive and barbaric nomadic customs shrouded with mythical Sufi
rituals that prevailed in the land. That is exactly what Mr. Goth is trying to allure
us about the happy co-existence between the .Somali culture. and .Sufi Islam.
in his substandard terminologies.
Traditionally, a Somali man would either be a Wadaad (cleric) or a Waranleh
(spear bearer or warrior). The vast majority of the men belonged to the Waranleh
category. The Wadaads were not only few in number, but also poorly educated
and they lacked learning/teaching resources. The roles of the Wadaad were
limited to religious functions, which included presiding over marital and
death/burial affairs. The rest of socio-economic and political endeavors of the
community were monopolized by the Waranlehs. Women were categorically
excluded from all functions of the community outside their immediate
A few of the Wadaads were productive members of the community. The majrity
of them were lazy dependants who fed on the blood of the community. They
collected saqadaat and zakaat from the community and kept it to themselves
instead of distributing to the rightful needy recipients. The Wadaads were also
paid for reciting Mawliid, Manaaqib, Qaasid, Burdah and writing of
Qardhaasaha, and Madiidooyin to bewitch women.
The Wadaads used to play dirty tricks on people who trusted them. They claimed
to possess some extraordinary powers and special forces of invisible spirits
(known as Jin and Rooxaan). Consequently, they created and instilled fear and
superstitions in the minds and hearts of the people. No one could dare to oppose
or say anything negative about those corrupt wadaads.
Some of the more influential Wadaads would even promote themselves to the
rank of Sufis and eventually Awliya.. They consumed large quantities of Qaad
and smoked hashish/tobacco to reach to the nirvana of Mirqaan. Somehow a
typical Sufi/weli in Somalia would be a shabby, mentally disturbed, Qaad and
tobacco/hashish addict with hair plaits like those of Rastafarians.
There are two nasty cultures introduced into Somalia by the corrupt Wadaads.
These are:
1. Idolization and glorification of self-styled persons as Awliya.
2. Eating of Qaad.
These satanic cultures are closely interlinked and they reinforce one another in
their devastating effects on the society. In order to secure public acceptance for
the utilization of the Qaad, the wadaads nicknamed it Quut-al-Awliya.. The
disastrous impact of the Quut-al-Awliya. on our people visibly appears on the
face of almost every Somali. It is saddest that Qaad consumption is still
continuing to rise particularly among women and children who are catching up
very fast with the men already addicted to the habit of Mirqaan.
The wadaads and their captives have a number sayings among, which are:
! Meded yaa Jiilani
! Awliyo Allay adeeg
! Weli siraata, weli duula, mid buur yaalla, ku bannaan yaalla .
! Caado la gooyaa cadho Alle ayay leedahay
! La joojiyana bannaan, la jiifiyana bannaan
! . Wankii badhi laa balaayada kaa dabbaala.
Admittedly there were some good Wadaads who were better educated and
enlightened. They were called Sheikhs and were few in number and
communities loved them for their integrity, good manners and knowledge with the
Diin. We owe a great deal to those Sheikhs who, against all odds, kept the torch
of Islam high and alight in the Horn of Africa. The young and better-educated
Ulama of today are following the footsteps of those respectable Sheikhs in
helping our people to rediscover Islam by eradicating myths and idolatry
practices of present day Jaahiyah.
6. Crimes Against Women in the Name of Islam
The Somali women have very little to be proud about Mr. Goth.s .Somali
Culture.. They were subjugated and abused under such savage nomadic
customs. They were subjected to the most sadistic, brutal and inhumane
practices of FEMALE GENETAL MUTILATION (FGM), which has nothing to do
with Islam. They were deprived of virtually all rights and treated like beasts of
burden by men. They were barred from learning and even practicing islam so
that they would remain shackled by ignorance and live in bondage; oblivious to
their God given rights under the Shari.ah. These horrendous crimes against
women were committed under mutual collusion and consent between the socalled
Somali culture and the freakish wadaad/fooxleh misinterpretations of
Islam. If Mr. Goth.s statement that women were safe with men in the open is
true, why were the young and innocent girls subjected and continue to be
subjected to such cruel FGM practices? No Sir. That is your own speculation. In
real life, however, women never felt safe with men. That is why they used to walk
behind men and keep safe distance behind a barrier during encounters in the
open. Under the pastoral customary laws, women hardly had any legal rights. I
suppose that Mr. Goth knows that if a woman would get raped, injured or
pregnant outside marriage, two things would normally happen to her. First she
would always be the guilty one for whatever wrong thing that may happen to her
and, secondly, she would be compensated for by getting married to same man
who mistreated her. For his punishment, the man would be obliged to marry her
as a used or defective entity. That is the justice available to women under Mr.
Goth.s .Somali culture.. Unlike the discriminatory nomadic customs, people,
irrespective of their sexes, are equal under the Shari.ah.
Besides the appallingly heinous FGM practiced under the primitive nomadic
culture, which Mr. Goth fanatically adorns, and his brand of devilish
fooxleh/sufism, Somali girls were sold away into marriage at an early age in life
in exchange for hefty dowries, tortured and raped during their wedding nights,
frequently battered by their husbands, worked like slaves, disowned and
deprived of their rightful entitlements. Worse than that, they were socially
subjected to so many discriminatory practices. Baby boys were highly preferred
to girls. In such a nomadic tribal social set up, known for its male-dominated
structure, women had no place and belonged to no tribe neither by birth nor
marriage. They used to be widely victimized for things that were not of their
making. The hardest hit were the mothers with no sons of their own. They were
subjected to a great deal of humiliation for not giving birth to baby sons. Wife
battering was a widespread practice. Weapons/tools like heavy sticks (budh) and
.hangoole. (for whatever purpose Mr. Goth mentioned it in his article) were used
for .good. beatings that would require the services of a local doctor (Faradin) to
be called in to dress up deep cuts and fix broken bones of the skull, ribs or limbs.
Women were also abused psychologically. The Somali oral literature is full of
poems, proverbs, sayings, stories, etc. that defame women of all ages. The very
extract by Mr. Goth from the late Abdillahi Abdi Shube rhyme, reproduced
below, is a typical example of such abusive .literature.. Unfortunately, Mr. Goth
can not comprehend how offensive and rude these lines are to the women.
.Shaydaan aanad arkayn,
oo shaambinaaya agtaadu,
waa naag shaadir hagoogan..
Other examples include:
! Wixii xumba xaawa leh
! Naago waa dhallaan raad weyn
! Kal caano galeen kas magalo
! Aamin dumar ma yeeshoo, Muunisa oo aqoon la, Shaydaan afoofee
! Habar tukatay bay iga tahay!
! Kas dumar oo kuudud rag kaaga dambeeyey kii hore maaha!
! Rag ballan baa xidha naagana meher
Even today, women are habitually ridiculed in almost all musicals, plays, and in
songs. The actresses in most plays are given roles that belittle the strength,
integrity and intelligence of women. By way of illustration, I can mention the
following as typical plays in which women were maltreated:
! Hablayahaw Hadmaad Guursan Doontaan
! Doob Qalanjadiis Gabay
! Beenay waa Run
! Ragow Aarsi Haween u Adkaysata Markiinna
! Qabyo.
In folklore dance encounters, men and women used to engage one another in
dialogue to test each other.s knowledge, experience and mastery of poetry.
However, men used to be rude with their lady opponents whenever they outshine
them. The famous encounters between Cambaro Ahmed and Hurre Walanwal,
and Cirro-tidic with son many challengers can be mentioned.
7. Concluding Remarks
What I have pointed out above are just a few of many mistreatments that women
in Somalia have been experiencing for many centuries under an ungodly
combination of local customs reminiscent of prehistoric era and wicked Sufi
practices. The Somali people have been suffering from the yoke of these pagan
customs and Sufi rituals for too long. The time has come to stamp them out of
the country all together. With help of Allah, the new generation of dedicated and
determined ulama shall be victorious in liberating our women from the bondage
of sexism. The evil forces of the westernization and their .fooxleyaal. will soon
be eradicated. Be sure, Mr. Goth, the age of enlightenment of women has come
and perverts like you cannot stop it. The tide is just too big for a hallucinated Sufi
to stand against it.
Towards the end of his article, Mr. Goth asked .why is it that it is always those
who fail in school or in life who turn to such religious extremism?.. This is
an absurd, illogical, imprecise and presumptuous and meaningless question that
no person in his/her right mind should waste time to offer an answer to it. I
wonder what kind of criteria does Mr. Goth use to measure success in school or
in life! The real losers are those described in Ayat 103 to106 of Surat AlKahf
(quoted below).
